What is The Code?
The Tomorrow’s Engineers Code is a commitment to increase the number and diversity of young people entering engineering and technology careers.
How does The Code work?
To achieve our goal to get more young people working in engineering and technology, we believe that working together, with a joined up approach, will make a real difference. That's why Signatories commit to The Code's 4 pledges.
Signatories get a clear framework to design, deliver or fund engineering and/or technology outreach activities to inspire young people.
Outreach programmes include careers talks at school, hosting young people at your work place, careers coaching (virtual or in person), becoming a STEM Ambassador, collaborating with other local businesses, hosting practical activities at a science fair for young people... and more!
See the impact on outreach activities The Code has had for Signatories.
Why do we need The Code?
The engineering and technology workforce in the UK could, and should, be more diverse.
Did you know:
- Women make up just 15.7% of the engineering workforce
- 37% of Black engineering graduates are working in engineering 6 months after graduation, compared to 41% of Asian engineering graduates and 60% of White engineering graduates
- 9% of engineering and technology students are disabled, compared with the average of 14%
Careers in engineering and technology are broad and full of possibility. So we need to work harder than ever to make sure that engineering and technology are attractive and accessible for young people.
More than 300 organisations are already doing important work via The Code. Together we can deliver a joined-up approach to drive change at scale.
Why should you join The Code?
You'll join more than 300 members working together to inspire all young people into engineering and technology careers.
As a member of The Code you'll get:
- Access to resources to help set up and/or improve your outreach work using the 4 pledges – wherever you are on your journey
- Opportunities to learn and share best practice with others via Tomorrow's Engineers Live and our regular workshop programme
- Access to Code Connect to link up and learn from like-minded organisations
Who can join The Code?
Any organisation with UK operations that funds, designs or delivers engineering or technology outreach activities (or intends to) is invited to become a Code Signatory. Organisations who support the aims of The Code but don't fulfil the criteria, can join as a Supporter.
Members include small and large businesses, engineering firms, professional institutions, government departments, universities, museums, third sector organisations and more. See the full list of members here.
Don't forget, it's free to join!
