What is The Code?
Launched in October 2020, the Tomorrow’s Engineers Code is a commitment to work toward common goals to increase the diversity and number of young people entering engineering careers.
To achieve these goals, Signatories make four pledges about their approach to funding, designing, delivering, and learning from engineering-inspiration activities (including STEM programmes dedicated to inspiring young people into engineering).
Signatories form the Code Community which is made up of engineering firms, professional institutions, government departments, subject associations, universities, museums, third sector organisations and more. Any organisation with UK operations that funds, designs and/or delivers engineering-inspiration activities is invited to become a Signatory. It’s free to become a member of this community and any organisation not meeting the criteria above, can join as a Supporter.
Together we can:
- Share and build understanding of what works
- Improve the quality, inclusivity, targeting and reach of activities designed to inspire young people
Why do we need The Code?
Engineering is a varied, stimulating and valuable career and we need to work harder than ever to ensure that it is accessible for this generation of young people – for their own life chances and so that we have a diverse and insightful workforce that enables the UK to thrive.
The collective impact of work across the sector needs to grow to help young people understand what engineering is, how to get into it, and be motivated and able to access the educational and training opportunities on the way.
Many organisations are already doing important work but together, via The Code, we can deliver a joined-up approach to drive change at scale.
How does The Code work?
From an idea at a Year of Engineering roundtable to a Code shaped by more than 100 organisations and individuals, we now have a framework of four pledges:
The Code provides a robust approach to increasing our collective impact and our return on investment in engineering engagement. It will enable organisations to improve the impact of individual initiatives through collaboration with other Signatories.
Signatories will have access to support that will empower them to meet the pledge areas including evidence-based summaries of what works, case studies, and ideas for improvement.
Over the coming months, we will be working closely with the Code Community to build out the support available to Signatories. For more details please visit the Getting Started page.
Who is behind The Code?
Co-created by and for the engineering community, The Code is ‘owned’ by its community of Signatories and Supporters.
An Advisory Board and informal Thinking Group support EngineeringUK, which has been chosen to manage and deliver The Code and its community. EngineeringUK will facilitate the governance of The Code and is committed to a formal biennial review of The Code and how Signatories are meeting the pledges.
In addition to the 100+ co-creators, The Code is being brought to life through funding and in-kind support from companies and organisations we’re working in partnership with, including Anglo American, the Department for Education, EngineeringUK and Shell.
